About Evan
Why not? As in ‘Why not change the world?’ A question often dreamed of, but supposedly rarely achieved. I disagree. Changing the world can happen – and does – more often than not.
Everyday I encounter great people. These people change the world little by little. Yes, world peace and hunger remain unresolved. People everywhere struggle to fight poverty and find means to educated themselves. But what if…
Great people with great ideas exist. Too many times ideas remain just that, ideas. But what if… What if those ideas could be shared? What if sharing one idea lead to another? What if someone out there knew a little bit more about the idea? What if we made those ideas reality? Maybe then the ‘Why not’ question gets a little less intimidating.
This blog is my idea – an idea I need more help to make a reality. The idea creates an online coffee shop. A place to sit around and relax, have that coffee or tea, talk with friends and discuss the things that matter. A place for intelligent conversation to spark those ideas that pertain to the ‘Why not?’ and ‘What if?’ questions. And more so, to see what happens when our ideas and minds come together.
My idea – my blog – arose from great friendships and conversations. My parents and great friends in life Justin, Nick and Brad established this side of me – to ask questions, to dig deeper,to push back, to wonder what else could be done. And it’s my good friend Andy that convinced me that blogging might just be the way and helped me get going.
But this theme of the coffee shop stems from conversations with a great mentor in my life, Fr. Jim. We sat – over coffee, lunch or dinner – too often to hack out the issues and questions of the world today. And it became eerie how often our predictions and chatter came true. Just by sitting down and spending the time, picking each others’ brains, listening to the old and new, asking over and over ‘what if?’
So help me bring that conversation here. On a bigger level. A level that connects idea people with reality people. A level that lets us start to answer the “why nots’ and ‘what ifs.’ And little by little change the world.
About me
Graduating from Drake University in Des Moines, IA last spring, I just arrived in Washington, DC to chase my dreams. The hope here is to put my politcs and journalism degree to work for something bigger. I spent the last year around Des Moines and my home in Edina, MN. I’m a political and current events junkie, a sports die hard and avid runner.
Thankfully I landed a job in DC with Watson/Mulhern LLC. Watson/Mulhern is a very small public afairs and communications firm in Georgetown specializing in the life sciences. It’s what I get for being a Minnesota and Iowa boy. I’m looking forward to learning from the brilliant people around me.
Working on this blog with me is my great friend Justin Koester. He can write what he wants about himself. But together we are learning the vast possibilites of what the web holds. And hopefully someday – soon as we figure this stuff out – we can do even more, creating more conversations that matter.
Thanks sincerely for checking out the site. I would love to hear from you – and feel free to share if you have any great ideas or tips for me on this journey into the blogosphere. Or if you just live in the DC area and want to go for a run, talk hockey, grab some coffee and shoot the shit and extend out networks.
